BMW M70 V12 Torque Settings

This section deals with torque settings for the reassembly of the engine. Nearly all of the engine is manufactured from aluminium and careful attention must be paid to ensure fasteners are not overtightened. Make sure you mark each fastener after it has been torqued to ensure that you have not missed any.

 Cylinder Head
Stage 1
Tighten
   30 Nm
Stage 2
Wait
   15 Minutes
Stage 3
Tighten
   120 Degrees
     
Note: Cylinder head bolts are torque to yield, You cannot reuse these bolts if they have been previously torqued.

Refer to this diagram for the correct tightening sequence. Mark each head bolt with a dab of paint etc to ensure you do not over/under tighten any of the bolts.

 

 Main & Big End Bearings, Oil Pump and Crankshaft Pulley/Damper

   20 Nm

   430-450 Nm
Note: Crankshaft Pulley/Damper bolt is one use only and must be replaced. Big End Bearing bolts re-use is indicated in some documentation and not in others. The thread does not extend the full length of the bolt so re-use would seem to be acceptable. Examine each bolt carefully before re-use.
